Brutal weather maps turn orange, white and blue as freezing rain and snow to batter UK | Weather | News

Britain is likely to be battered by heavy rain, snow, and a rare weather event as the dramatic weather maps turn orange, white, and blue.

Weather maps from WXCharts suggest that chaotic conditions are likely to hit the country middle of March. The weather charts show parts of Scotland covered in snow and freezing rain, while the remaining areas of the country will be drenched in rain on March 17. Freezing rain, a rare weather phenomenon which is mostly seen in the US will impact areas around Aberdeen and Fort William in Scotland, the maps have suggested. Areas around Wick, Inverness, and Portree will be affected by the snowy conditions, with a possibility of 10cm of snow, according to the weather maps.

According to the Met Office, freezing rain tends to start its life as snow, ice, sleet or hail, but passes through a layer of air that’s above 0C on the way down to the ground, melting into a liquid water droplet. While the northern areas will experience snow and rain, the Midlands and the southern parts of the country will witness rainy conditions.

The maps suggest that areas such as Newcastle, Plymouth, Manchester, Birmingham, and Cardiff are likely to see heavy rainfall.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast between March 16 and 30 suggest some longer spells of rain, however, it doesn’t confirm anything about the snow.

It reads: “Changeable conditions most likely through mid-March. Showers or longer spells of rain at times for all areas though likely more frequent in the north and west of the country.

“The south and east seeing drier interludes. Temperatures likely to be above average.

“During late March there is an increased chance of high pressure becoming more dominant.

“This bringing more prolonged settled spells with the focus of rain and stronger winds across the far northwest of the country. Above average temperatures remain likely.”
