Liverpool ace shows off gruesome black eye a day after Man City battle | Football | Sport

Alexis Mac Allister showed how he put his body on the line for Liverpool during their 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Mac Allister needed medical attention on the pitch after being accidentally caught during the build-up to Omar Marmoush's goal, which was ruled out for offside. Marmoush inadvertently fell onto Mac Allister, which appeared to knock him into a state of confusion, leading to some concerned faces on the Liverpool bench.

The central midfielder subsequently received treatment from the team doctors, before he picked himself up and soldiered on for the full 90 minutes.

Less than 24 hours after the game, the Argentinian exhibited his battle scars for everyone to see on social media. He posted an image of his gruesome black eye and swollen face to his Instagram story, which featured heavy bruising around his eyelid and eye socket.

While the 26-year-old's bulging eye injury may look serious, it's not likely to keep the midfielder out of action for too long.

Mac Allister's valiant display in the middle of the park embodied a fine overall performance from the Premier League leaders, bossing the midfield and suffocating the space for Nico Gonzalez.

Liverpool took a priceless victory away from the Etihad Stadium thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, with the past weekend proving to be a huge one for the Reds. Their win in Manchester came just 24 hours after 10-man Arsenal were beaten 1-0 at home by West Ham.

And those two results mean that Arne Slot's side are 11 points clear of their title rivals with 12 games to go, putting them in a commanding position to clinch their first domestic crown since 2019-20.

Mac Allister would have felt sore around his right eye after the bruise surfaced on Monday, but it seemed the midfielder was in decent spirits after the Arsenal game.

He even revealed that he caught the game on television on Saturday and twisted the knife into Arsenal, admitting he enjoyed watching them lose in the London derby.

"I watched the [Arsenal] game when I got home [from training], the last 30 minutes I think," Mac Allister said after the win at the Etihad. "You want them to lose – that is pretty normal because it makes our life easier. There are many games ahead and they are a really good team."

Liverpool will be keen for Mac Allister to recover quickly, with another crucial game against Newcastle at Anfield to come on Wednesday.
