Banish grout mould with ‘star ingredient’ which works in 10 minutes

Grout between tiles, windows and other areas is well-known for gathering dirt and grime over the years.

Not only this but if not cleaned regularly, mould and limescale can form in the grout, causing permanent marks.

Whilst it is tempting to use bleach or white vinegar, these items can actually wreck the grout over time.

Instead, the mould experts at Advanced Damp recommended using baking soda.

They said: “Baking soda is a star ingredient when it comes to grout cleaning. This wonder ingredient acts as a natural abrasive, meaning it can tackle tough stains without being harsh on the grout itself.

“As an added bonus, it helps whiten the grout as it cleans. To clean the grout, mix baking soda and water into a container to form a paste.

“Dip your brush into the paste and then apply it directly to the grout lines. The beauty lies in its sheer simplicity, just one ingredient, and its effectiveness for a quick and easy clean.”

For a more potent cleaning pasta, consider swapping water for hydrogen peroxide, which can tackle mould.

It’s also a much safer ingredient to use in the home compared to bleach, according to the pros.

They added: “Combine the two household ingredients in a bowl, mixing them until a thick paste forms.

“Leave it to sit for around five to 10 minutes to allow it to work its magic. Using an old toothbrush, apply the paste to the affected grout lines.”

Initially, scrubbing with the paste might not seem much different to using just baking soda and water, but it’ll take a few minutes for the transformation to show.

The mould experts note: “While this method may require a bit more effort, the results are undeniably worth it.

“The key to keeping your grout gleaming is all about prevention. By taking a few simple steps now, you can stop grime and mould from building up in the future.”

This includes drying the grout after each shower to make sure no moisture is left behind. This can be done with an old towel or squeegee.

It’s also important to keep the bathroom ventilated by using the extractor fan or opening a window after using the shower or bath.

The experts also advised washing shower curtains, curtain liners and bath mats regularly to tackle mould and mildew.
