4 kettle cleaning hacks to banish stubborn limescale in under one hour

While limescale isn’t harmful, an expert says it can cause a variety of problems, including making kettles less efficient.

Limescale contains the mineral calcium carbonate which can also cause hot beverages to have a slightly bitter or metallic taste.

Ryan Calvert, product expert at Hiatt Hardware, said: “Limescale build-up inside your kettle can make your appliance less efficient overall.

“This causes the heating element to work harder and longer wait times for hot water, both of which can reduce your kettle’s overall lifespan.

“Limescale also facilitates an environment for bacteria to grow which can have an adverse effect on health if left too long. Here are four handy solutions we’d recommend to clean and descale your kettle."

1. Baking soda

Baking soda can effectively remove mineral deposits inside a kettle due to its mild abrasive properties and ability to neutralise acids.

When mixed with water, it can help to dissolve and scrub the limescale without damaging the appliance.

The expert noted: “Simply boil a mixture of baking soda and water in the kettle and let it sit for a while before rinsing thoroughly for a clean result.”

2. Cola

The expert continued: “Cola is effective in descaling because it contains phosphoric acid, which can break down limescale deposits.

“The acidity in cola helps to dissolve mineral build-up, making it easier to clean. Simply pour the cola into the kettle, let it sit for an hour, then rinse thoroughly.”

3. Tomato sauce

Tomato sauce is highly acidic, which, according to the pro, makes it a great household item for tackling limescale.

Start by unplugging and emptying the kettle before squeezing some tomato sauce into the base and letting it sit for up to one hour before cleaning.

Make sure to boil a full kettle of water and pour it out for a final clean before using the water in the appliance.

4. Lemon juice

The expert explained: “Lemon juice is effective for descaling a kettle due to its natural acidity, which helps break down and dissolve mineral deposits.

“Simply kill a kettle with a mixture of equal parts water and lemon juice, then bring to a boil.

“After letting it sit for about 30 minutes, rinse thoroughly to remove any remaining limescale.”

All of these items can be picked up for under 50p from various supermarkets, making all of them super affordable.
