If your home Wi-Fi is causing you headaches you might be on the lookout for a new broadband provider, but the performance issues could be to do with your router rather than your home’s connection.

If you’re paying for zippy internet speeds but the free router you got from your provider isn’t keeping up or can’t spread healthy signals to all corners of your home, it’s worth considering upgrading.

Amazon seems to appreciate this. The firm today announced its new Eero 7 and Eero 7 Pro Wi-Fi routers, calling the Eero 7 its “most affordable Wi-Fi 7 router” at £169.99. Wi-Fi 7 is the latest Wi-Fi standard, with both these new gadgets being able to deliver the fastest possible speeds, so long as your connected devices are also compatible.

The Eero 7 Pro costs a whopping £299.99 for a single unit, with deals available for both models if you buy three, which might be necessary if you have a big property.

If you thought that was a lot to spend on a router, Amazon’s already selling the Eero Max 7 for £599.99 that can support the very fastest wired and wireless Ethernet speeds.

The base Eero 7 can cope with wireless speeds up to 1.8 Gbps and wired speeds up to 2.3 Gbps, sure to serve even the most demanding internet users such as online console gamers or households with multiple devices all trying to game or stream video simultaneously. One uni can cover up to 190 square metres in signal, but you can buy multiple if needed and use Eero’s TrueMesh tech to create what’s known as a mesh network with several routers.

If that’s not enough for you, the Eero Pro 7 can achieve wireless speeds of up to 3.9 Gbps and wired speeds up to 4.7 Gbps, and can cover the same distance as its cheaper sibling. Amazon even claims the Pro 7 can handle “hundreds” of connected devices at once.

“For ten years, eero has obsessed over delivering exceptional wifi because we know it is as important as our electricity and running water,” said Eric Saarnio, vice president, Amazon Devices International.

“We've continued to innovate and have gone well beyond our first home mesh wifi system—there are tens of millions of eero devices that power homes and businesses across 24 countries.”

Eero first started selling its Wi-Fi hardware in 2016 before the firm was acquired by Amazon in 2019.

Speed is one thing, but why else would you pay so much for a router? Eero also offers set up and maintenance through an official app for iPhone and Android as well as TrueRoam tech that moves devices onto the best router in your home depending on use and location as well as TrueChannel for equally handy optimisation.

You’ll also get automatic over the air security updates to keep your Eero hardware up to date and resistant to the latest hacks and bugs. All the new routers can also be set up as smart home hubs for Matter, Thread, and Zigbee devices, so many products from other companies such as smart bulbs, blinds and other tech can be controlled from the router - not something many free routers from UK broadband providers can do.

An optional Eero subscription also gives you access to the 1Password manager as well as additional malware protection and a VPN, but Eero is possible to use without this, thankfully.

The Eero 7 and Eero Pro 7 are available to buy from Amazon from February 26.
