Asda issues urgent recall for burgers with 3 undeclared allergens

Asda shoppers have been urged to check their recent purchases as the latest major retailer to issue a food recall.

The supermarket giant has alerted customers to the danger posed by three undeclared allergens in a popular branded burger product.

A recall notice published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) states: "McGees is recalling McGees Steak Burgers because the product contains soya, sulphites and wheat (gluten), which are not declared on the label."

This product is sold in Asda stores in Northern Ireland only but affects anyone with an allergy or sensitivity to the listed allergens.

According to the FSA, the product is "a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya, a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites, an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or coeliac disease".

Product details

McGees Steak Burgers

  • Pack size: 420g
  • Batch codes: 040225 and 060225
  • Use by: February 14, 2025, and February 16, 2025

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought it.

Asda customers who have bought the above product and have an allergy to soya and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten and/or coeliac disease, have been warned "do not eat it".

Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

Anaphylaxis.org states that most people who react to sulphites have sensitivity rather than an allergy. However, it can cause allergy-type symptoms that can sometimes be serious.

The main symptoms of sulphite sensitivity include irritated, tight, or constricted airways. Wheezing, a tight chest, a cough, hives, stomach pain or vomiting and worsening eczema are also common.

Symptoms of wheat allergies include hives, stomach issues, and nasal congestion. Symptoms of gluten intolerance include abdominal pain and frequent bloating.

Coeliac disease can range from mild to severe, and symptoms often come and go. The NHS states that common symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, constipation, vomiting, fatigue, and an itchy rash.
