Russia is preparing to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile in a threatening show of force, according to Ukraine’s military intelligence. Kyiv’s Main Directorate of Intelligence, known as the GUR, said Russia plans to carry out a “training and combat” launch of the weapon on Monday night to intimidate Ukraine and the West.

The GUR said the RS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile has a range of more than 10,000 kilometres (6,200 miles) — reportedly nearly double the distance from Russia to the UK. In a post on Telegram, the agency said Russia plans to launch the missile “in order to demonstratively pressure and intimidate Ukraine, as well as the EU and NATO member states”. It said the missile, equipped with training ammunition, will be launched from Russia’s Sverdlovsk region.

Ukraine’s air force said 216 drones were intercepted or lost.

Officials said a woman, 28, was killed and others were injured, including a four-year-old child.

"Russia has a clear goal – to continue killing civilians,” said Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

The strikes came less than a day after a Russian drone attack on a civilian bus left nine dead and seven injured in an attack that Ukrainian officials called a "war crime".

Ukraine and Russia hold their first face-to-talks since 2022 in Turkey earlier this week.

There was no breakthrough in the talks but both nations did agree to swapping 1,000 prisoners of war each.

Ukrainian defence minister Rustem Umerov said talks at “leaders’ level” would be the next step following the talks.

Volodymyr Zelensky was not in Istanbul for the meeting but stressed Ukraine was "ready to take the fastest possible steps for the sake of real peace".

Donald Trump says he will speak to both Vladimir Putin and Mr Zelensky over the phone on Monday as he looks to end the “bloodbath” in Ukraine.

He said he will speak to the Russian President first, before then talking to Mr Zelensky and NATO nations.
