Last year, I booked a trip to Istanbul on a whim. I’d heard the usual mix of opinions, some raved about the food and architecture, others warned me it was “overhyped” and “too chaotic.” But nothing prepared me for how quickly and completely I’d fall in love with the city.

So, imagine my surprise when I recently came across a study by Radical Storage that named Istanbul the most disappointing city in the world when it comes to tourist attractions. The report cited a 16% negative mention rate across major landmarks, with Topkapi Palace topping the list as the most underwhelming. But, I couldn’t disagree more. Istanbul might be loud and busy, but it is a capital city after all. The queues for some of the major sites are long. But despite this, it is one of the most fascinating, vibrant, and culturally rich cities I’ve ever visited. 

This is a place where ancient empires quite literally overlap. I stood in the Hagia Sophia, a building that has been a church, a mosque, and a museum, it is a silent witness to nearly 1,500 years of history.

The Grand Bazaar was definitely not one to be missed either, every corner sells stories just as much as spices or silk, and the shop owners are lovely, offering generous portions of samples of teas and Turkish delights.

Not to mention, Istanbul had some of the best food. From delicate baklava dripping with syrup to sizzling kebabs cooked over charcoal, Turkish cuisine is full of bold flavours and warm hospitality.

Located on the seaside, the city also had excellent seafood from stuffed mussels to grilled sardines, and it hardly broke the bank.

You would feel the difference in affordability immediately, especially if you’ve just come from Western Europe. Even in the city centre, a pint of beer only set me back £3, while a full meal came to £12.

While Topkapi Palace wouldn't be on the top of my list of places to visit, one underwhelming attraction doesn’t speak for an entire city. Istanbul is so much more than a palace tour.

It’s sunrise calls to prayer echoing through the streets. It’s ferries crossing continents in 20 minutes. Istanbul feels like a world away from life here in the UK, and it's only a four-hour flight away.

To call Istanbul's attractions 'disappointing' is more than uncalled for in my opinion. For me, it’s one of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever been, and I’m already planning my return.
