The UK is home to over 2,500 train stations that take millions of passengers across the country everyday. The stations all vary in size and capacities, some focusing on shorter and more local journeys, whilst others on longer commutes. Many stations work tirelessly around the clock to serve commuters including Edinburgh Waverley Station, which the UK's biggest station outside of London, Waterloo.

Stretching across 25 acres of land and housing a staggering 20 platforms, Edinburgh Waverley Station is one of the two stations that serves Ediburgh. The station was started off as three seperate ones - North Bridge, General, and Canal Street, but by the 1850s the three stations became Waverly, named after a 19-century novel by Walter Scott.

By 1868, the three stations were replaced by what passengers know today as Edinburgh Waverley Station, which drew more people into visiting the surrounding area. Today, the station is one second busiest station in Scotland, after Glasgow Central.

The incredible 20 platforms are placed in a clockwise direction from the north east, with three pairs of platforms sharing the same tracks.

There are two tracks on the north side, with the northernmost track split between Platform 20 in the west and Platform 1 in the east. The other split is between Platform 19 in the west and Platform 2 in the east.

Platforms 3 to 6 are all east facing bay platforms, and four tracks on the south end including a track split between platform 11 and platform 7, platform 10, and platform 9 and 8 which are both parted into a west and east section. The seven west-facing bay platforms are 12 to 18.

Every day, the station sees over 80,000 pass through and over 1,100 train movements take place, with routes that start and end in all different parts of the country.

Several train operating companies serve the station including London North Eastern Railway, CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, Lumo, Caledonian Sleeper, and ScotRail.

For any train fantics, a trip to the huge station is well worth it as nearby are a number of interesting places to visit such as The Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street Gardens and Arthur's Seat.
