Penhaligons’ fragrances have a longstanding connection to the Royal Family, with four royal Warrants under their belt and even a scent crafted in partnership with King Charles himself (the Highgrove Bouquet Eau de parfum is said to have been inspired by the Highgrove Gardens and created in collaboration with The King’s Foundation). However, as such, fragrances tend to come with a high price tag. In fact, full-size bottles can retail for as much as £245.

However, thrifty shoppers can get their hands on one of the brand’s most popular fragrances, plus four other scents, for just £10 each. This is all thanks to a scent discovery set.

Empressa is one of the brand’s most loved fragrances, with an impressive review score of 4.5 out of a possible five stars on the Penhaligon's website. One shopper said: "A beautiful eau de parfum with a fabulous sweet, floral scent with a wonderful warm undertone of amber, musk and sandalwood. I love it and found it lasted most of the day before I needed a light top-up. Suitable for day or night. Although it does have a high price tag, you do get what you pay for, and this is an amazing quality fragrance."

The fragrance has also received high praise on Sephora, where it is available to buy. One shopper even likened the scent to that of “royalty”. 

They said: “The scent of royalty. Opens with a rose and fruit, and lingers with a powdery patchouli and bergamot. It lasts for probably five or six hours with two sprays. It's definitely a big scent in a small package. If I could envision what it smells like to be a wealthy queen, this is it.”  [SIC]

However, some consumers found the scent too mature, with one admitting: "I can't lie I'm not a huge fan of this scent. I did end up giving it to my mother. It seems to be a more mature scent and isn't my cup of tea. The packaging and logo is beautiful though".

But, of course, not everyone has £215 to spend on a fragrance. Luckily, the Penhaligons scent discovery set is a fantastic way to test the perfume, plus four other best-selling scents for just £50. That works out at £10 a bottle.

Of course, given that it is a scent discovery set, the fragrances are only 5ml bottles, but they offer a fantastic way to test out a selection of fragrances without splurging. The small bottles are also great if you’re jetting off on holiday this summer.
