Santorini and Mykonos may top every travel influencer’s bucket list, but for many holidaymakers, the reality is far less idyllic. From packed beaches and two-hour dinner queues and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds jostling for sunset views, these once-tranquil Greek gems have become victims of their own popularity.

With a record-breaking number of tourists visiting Greece in 2024, these iconic islands are now struggling under the weight of mass tourism. But thankfully the appeal of Greece can still be found on other quieter islands that have not been ruined by overtourism.

Searches for “hidden Greece destinations” have skyrocketed in recent months as savvy travellers turn their attention to the country’s lesser-known islands, places where the food is just as fresh, the views just as breathtaking and the pace of life wonderfully slow.

Claire Shields, base manager at Sunsail, a leader in yacht charter holidays, shared her favourite under-the-radar destinations with The Express.

Here are Claire’s top picks for hidden gems you should visit before the crowds catch on.

1. Lefkas

Often overlooked due to its mainland connection, Lefkas offers spectacular beaches like Porto Katsiki and Egremni, traditional mountain villages, and unbeatable sunset views. “It’s one of Greece’s best-kept secrets,” Claire said.

“You get the natural beauty of the Cyclades without the chaos.”

Its easy access via Preveza Airport and its proximity to smaller islands also makes Lefkas a perfect base for island-hopping. The Greek cuisine here, based on fresh local produce, adds to its charm.

2. Meganisi

A short boat ride from Lefkas, Meganisi is known for its sea caves, coves, and an untouched atmosphere. “There’s a true old-Greece feel here,” Claire says. “It’s authentic, it’s quiet, and the food is incredible.”

Papanikolis Cave is a must-see, once a WWII submarine hideout, it now offers otherworldly blue waters only accessible by boat.

3. Paxos

Described as an “artist’s paradise,” Paxos is one of the least commercial islands in the Ionian Sea. With crystal-clear waters and welcoming locals, it’s a haven for those looking to slow down.

“Nothing moves quickly on Paxos, and that’s exactly the point,” Claire said.

“You’ll feel like time has stopped in the best possible way.”

4. Kastos & Kalamos

Two tiny islands near Lefkas, these are for travellers seeking total tranquillity. Kalamos is wrapped in pine forests, while Kastos, home to fewer than 100 permanent residents, feels like a floating village.

“There are no big beach clubs, no resorts, just small harbours, traditional tavernas and clear, calm waters,” Claire said.

“It’s perfect for slow living.”

5. Atokos

Uninhabited and only accessible by boat, Atokos is wild, dramatic and serene. One House Bay, where wild pigs roam freely, is unlike anywhere else in Greece. “It’s as close as you’ll get to pure nature,” says Claire.

6. Agia Efimia, Kefalonia

This fishing village on Kefalonia’s east coast is ideal for a peaceful break. “You can enjoy a long lunch by the water while boats drift in and out of the marina,” Claire said.

For those seeking adventure, nearby caves like Melissani and Drogarti offer eerie, underground beauty and glowing blue lakes.

With Greece’s popularity only set to rise, get off the beaten path before everyone else does.
