The Trump administration could prevent British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney from travelling between the United States and Europe due to working with the International Criminal Court, according to a new report. The icon, married to Hollywood megastar George Clooney, has property in the US and is temporarily living in New York City.

The Financial Times reports that Amal, 47, is just one of the top British barristers to receive a warning about sanctions she could face. It’s understood that the UK Foreign Office has issued these cautions due to legal advice she and other lawyers provided to the International Criminal Court in a war crimes case against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

The warning comes after US President Donald Trump, 78, signed in Executive Order (E.O.) 14203, Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court, earlier this year. The E.O. named British lawyer and international crime court prosecutor Karim Khan, signalling him as the first barrister to face US sanctions for advising in the case.

The order claimed the court: “Engaged in illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel. The ICC has, without a legitimate basis, asserted jurisdiction over and opened preliminary investigations concerning personnel of the United States and certain of its allies, including Israel, and has further abused its power by issuing baseless arrest warrants,” targeting the Israeli Prime Minister and Former Minister of Defence.

The order goes on to say that the United States will not hesitate to impose “tangible and significant consequences on those responsible for the ICC’s transgressions, some of which may include the blocking of property and assets, as well as the suspension of entry into the United States of ICC officials, employees, and agents, as well as their immediate family members."

Born in Lebanon in 1978, Amal was raised in the United Kingdom and holds degrees from Oxford University and NYU.

In 2002, she was admitted to the bar in New York. Eight years later, she was called to the Bar of England and Wales, Inner Temple.

Amal, who married George, 63, in 2014, shares two children with the Up In The Air actor, twin daughters Alexander and Ella, seven.

The quartet usually live in the South of France, but have taken up residence in New York City as Academy Award winner George stars in the Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck.

The David Cromer-directed production has set up residence at the Winter Garden Theatre in Midtown Manhattan. It sees the father-of-two returning to the stage for the first time since 1986.

Previously, Amal revealed that privacy is paramount when it comes to her and the Ticket to Paradise favourite’s relationship.

“We definitely do more things in our home to ensure privacy in a context where we can't otherwise get it," she told British Vogue in 2018.

"That whole side — invasion of privacy and paparazzi, all of that — has happened because of something so happy and so important in my life," she added.

Meanwhile, George recently opened up about the pair’s 17-year age gap, admitting he didn’t think he would have “much of a chance” with her.

“I was 17 years older and she seemed to have everything she needed,” he told The New York Times in February.
