A major brewery that supplies beers across the country has been forced to close after more than 40 years in a fatal blow to a picturesque UK town. Since 1979, Exmoor Ales has brewed its beers in Wiveliscombe, Somerset.

However, Covid, inflation and the latest tax increases means the much loved firm who has been serving the community for over four decades is being forced to outsource its brewing operations to a factory in Surrey. Managing director Jonathan Price hopes this move will "keep the brand alive". Calling the situation "shocking" Mr Price believes the number of small breweries that have closed in recent years is "likely in the hundreds".

He told Somerset Live: "It is shocking to have to close a brewery, but the environment for small brewers has been one of decline since Covid. I don’t know how many small breweries have closed down, but likely in the hundreds."

In an emotional announcement the company boss thanked all his loyal customers for their "continuing support".

He said: "Thank you for your continuing support and keeping a proud local business independent."

Exmoor Ales will now collaborate with Surrey-based Hogs Back Brewery, a family-owned independent brewery.

As part of the new arrangement, Exmoor Ales’ head brewer, Sanghrash, will oversee production at Hogs Back Brewery, using the same recipes and yeast to maintain the distinctive taste and quality of the beers. Distribution will continue from Wiveliscombe, while Hogs Back will assist with national sales.

Jonathan insists Exmoor will remain independent and that the move is a partnership - not a takeover.

Jonathan added: "Foreign global brewers now represent 92% of the UK beer market and continue to march forward, well able to sustain the economic ups and downs. Recent tax increases, minimum wage increases and the new bottle tax weigh heavily on the smaller player."

The company has worked hard to save as many jobs as they can in Exmoor, including all the distribution for Wiveliscombe, the drivers, all the sales people, the office staff.

However, three staff have lost their jobs, which Mr Price said was "extremely tough".
