Giant plumes of smoke have been spotted billowing for miles above hills in Derbyshire with locals being warned to keep their windows and doors closed.

A dozen fire engines have rushed to the scene and remain at the blaze. People are being urged by the emergency services to avoid the area. Road closures are also in place.

Dramatic videos show the fire has burnt around "40 hectares".

Those watching the wildfires in the area took to social media to share images of the incident.

One said: "Huge fire near #Buxton clearly visible from top of Biddulph Moor. The cloud is something else."

Witnesses say the fire broke out near Errwood reservoir in the Upper Goyt Valley late morning.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) said crews were called to the blaze near the Errwood Reservoir in the Goyt Valley at 11:42 today, Wednesday.

Ten fire engines from Derbyshire and Cheshire are at the scene, the fire service added.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with a large wildfire near Errwood Reservoir in the Goyt Valley.

"Ten fire engines from Derbyshire and Cheshire are in attendance supported by a water carrier and a Unimog.

"We are receiving a high number of calls regarding a smoke plume which can be seen in the area.

"A road closure is currently in place from the Errwood Hall car park.

"Please avoid the area. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed if affected by the smoke."

In a statement on Facebook Glossop police said: "Emergency services are currently at the scene of a large moorland fire near to Errwood Reservoir in the Goyt Valley.

"A road closure is currently in place from the Errwood Hall car park and people are being urged to avoid the area."

The fire has been called the worst "the area has seen since 2018", according to a spokesperson from Peak District Moorland Group.

The statement said: "With multiple nests of all ground nesting birds being burnt out and the fire heading towards commercial forestry, it’s the worst this area has seen since the 2018 fires when 40 hectares burnt on Ravenslow, one of the most prized blanket bog areas in this location."
