A man accused of raping a deceased individual on a New York City subway before swiftly leaving the station has been apprehended after turning himself in. Felix Rojas, 44, was charged with rape nearly three weeks following the incident, which allegedly took place on an R train at Whitehall Street subway station just after midnight on April 9, as per the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The unfortunate victim was identified as 37 year old Jorge Gonzalez, who tragically died on the train before reportedly being targeted by Rojas. The alleged necrophiliac, from Brooklyn, surrendered to the police with his son on Sunday, according to sources. The NYPD reported that Gonzalez boarded the subway around 8pm on April 8, followed by Rojas approximately three hours later. Rojas is then accused of committing the horrific act on Gonzalez, whose cause of death remains unclear, shortly before midnight.
After the act, he fled from the train around 12:08am, according to security footage obtained by officers. The NYPD released an image of the suspect, possibly prompting Rojas to turn himself in. The force expressed their intention to question Rojas about the incident, without officially naming him, and asked the public for information, reports the Daily Star.
Police described Rojas as being around 5ft9 inches tall, weighing approximately 195lbs, with black hair and brown eyes. According to the New York Post, his last known address was Manor Avenue in the Soundview area of the Bronx. The cause of Jorge's death is still uncertain, but his estranged wife disclosed that he had struggled with alcoholism and suffered from liver cirrhosis, as reported by the Mirror.
This incident took place just two days after a shocking assault inside a New York subway station was reported to the NYPD on Monday, where a man allegedly attempted to rape a woman. The alleged victim, a woman aged 30, was attacked at Rutgers Street and East Broadway station on the Lower East side while waiting for a northbound F train around 2.30am.
According to the NYPD, the man wrapped his arm around the woman, forced her trousers down and tried to rape her. The suspect is believed to be between 25 and 35-years-old, roughly 5ft4 inches tall with light skin, a slim build and black hair. He was last seen wearing a white hoodie, dark blue jeans and white trainers.
