Prince Harry's year so far has seen him continue his legal battle over security, make a surprise visit to Ukraine and continue his plight to raise awareness of the dangers of social media. As well as these, one of the Duke of Sussex's biggest moments of 2025 has been the fallout with his beloved charity, Sentebale.

Just a month ago, Harry, along with the charity's co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, announced that they were stepping back from their roles after a row with chairwoman, Dr Sophie Chandauka, emerged. It was a move which left the prince “truly heartbroken", especially as the charity was set up in memory of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

With today (April 28) marking what would have been the 19th anniversary of Harry officially launching Sentebale, what happened to cause this latest heartbreak?

Sentebale, which means "forget-me-not" in Sesotho, was jointly set up by The Duke of Sussex and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 and officially announced to the public 19 years ago today. The charity has dedicated itself to helping African orphans and tackling poverty and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana.

The charity's website explains that Sentebale "works with young people and their communities to create sustainable solutions that address issues of health, wealth inequity, and climate resilience."

Prince Harry has visited the country many times over the years and first fell in love with the landlocked African nation during his gap year in 2004.

However, the relationship with his beloved charity went sour earlier this year, just short of what would have marked two decades of Harry using his platform to make a difference.

The latest stage of the row erupted earlier this month when it was claimed that Harry had become “disinterested” in Sentebale, with Chief Khoabane Theko, who claims to be Prince Seeiso's brother, saying the Duke's loss of interest “killed the spirit” of the organisation.

The comments came after chairwoman Dr Sophie Chandauka was accused by the Prince of telling “blatant lies” after the Charity Commission launched an investigation into “concerns” about how Sentebale has been run.

When the announcement of Prince Harry stepping back was initially made, Dr Chandauka issued a statement and took a swipe at those who "play the victim card and use the very press they disdain."

She said: "I am an African who has had the privilege of a world-class education and career. I will not be intimidated. I must stand for something. I stand for those other women who do not have the ways and means..."

She continued: "There are people in this world who behave as though they are above the law and mistreat people, and then play the victim card and use the very press they disdain to harm people who have the courage to challenge their conduct.

"Discerning readers will ask themselves: why would the Chair of the Board report her own Trustees to the Charity Commission? Why would the High Court of England and Wales accept her application to hear the matter at all if the case had no merit?

"Well, because beneath all the victim narrative and fiction that has been syndicated to press is the story of a woman who dared to blow the whistle."
