The UK has one of the best, if not the best, pub cultures in the world. Few things beat sitting in a sunny beer garden on a lovely summer's day. However, when it comes to the world's oldest pub, it's just a short hop away from Britain.

Tucked away in a stunning town close to the banks of a giant lake, it is a must-visit spot for any pub lover. Athlone in the Republic of Ireland is home to Sean’s Bar, which is believed to be the oldest pub in the world. According to Sean’s Bar’s official website, records show that it has been serving drinks since 900 AD. It already holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest pub in Ireland, and ongoing research is investigating its claim to the world title.

The pub has a fascinating history.

It was founded near the ancient Ford of Great Antiquity across the River Shannon, where a man named Luain Mac Luighdeach set up an inn to help travellers cross the river.

Over time, a settlement grew around it, eventually becoming the town of Athlone.

During renovations in the 1970s, ancient "wattle and wicker" walls and old coins were found at Sean’s Bar.

Parts of the original walls and some coins are now displayed in the pub and in Ireland’s National Museum.

Today, Sean’s Bar still has what visitors describe as “old-world charm”, with sawdust floors, an open fireplace, and plenty of ancient artefacts on the walls.

Visitors can also enjoy traditional Irish music, a beer garden overlooking the river, and even Sean’s own brand of whiskey.

According to Ireland.com, Athlone itself is full of history, from its 12th-century castle to the nearby Luan Gallery and bohemian cafes.

The town sits beside Lough Ree, one of Ireland’s largest lakes, which Discover the Shannon describes as a “mystical place steeped in myth and legend”.

Lough Ree is said to be home to ancient monastic sites and even rumours of a lake monster, similar to Scotland’s Loch Ness.

Athlone Castle, dating back to 1129, has interactive exhibits tracing 5,000 years of history.

Nearby, visitors can also stroll along the River Shannon and explore medieval ruins.
