Outlander's author Diana Gabaldon was left scratching her head over a character in the Starz series, forgetting she had written them into her own books. The second season of Outlander saw Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) hosting a dinner party in Paris, aiming to alter history and stop the catastrophic Battle of Culloden, reports the Scottish Daily Express.
They invited key figures including Bonnie Prince Charlie (Andrew Gower), the Duke of Sandringham (Simon Callow), and French nobles like the Comte St. Germain (Stanley Weber) and his wife, the Comtesse St. Germain (Gaia Weiss). However, Gabaldon seemed to have forgotten about the Comtesse, as revealed on the official Outlander podcast.
Screenwriter and producer Toni Graphia said: "The Comte St Germain shows up and he's a surprise guest and that woman - that is his wife."
She added: "I had a really great time watching the [fans] when we released the photos of the dinner party, long before the season started, all the fans trying to guess who is this woman at the dinner table? Who is she?" The answer was revealed in the episode La Dame Blanche: she was the Comte's wife.
Outlander's Toni Graphia revealed a surprising detail about the Comte St. Germain that even author Diana Gabaldon had forgotten, saying: "Which is something that Diana had in the book [Dragonfly In Amber] that was only one sentence. Diana herself actually forgot it."
She recounted how Gabaldon questioned a script detail: "So when I wrote in the script that the Comte brings his wife, Diana actually sent a note that said, 'The Comte doesn't have a wife.' I said, 'Actually, he does. It's in the book. You wrote it!'"
Gabaldon's reaction was one of amusement: "And she laughed and said, 'Oh my gosh, I forgot it! I forgot that he had a wife that I wrote that.'"
Graphia explained the decision to include the character: "But he did have a wife and we were like, 'Perfect, we'll put her in the dinner party' and everyone was trying to figure out for the longest time who she was."
In the Outlander series, the Comte is a mysterious figure with secrets of his own, including being a fellow time traveller and having connections with Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon).
The intrigue deepens as the Comte's past suggests a link to Fergus Fraser (César Domboy), hinting at a potential inheritance of wealth and property.
Diana Gabaldon is currently working on what may be the final instalment of the Outlander series, the eagerly anticipated 10th novel. Fans are on tenterhooks, but it seems they will have to wait for the book's release, which is not expected before the eighth season of the television adaptation concludes the saga on screen.
However, the producers of the Starz adaptation have already confirmed that the TV version will deviate from the original books.
The series finale of Outlander is anticipated to conclude Jamie and Claire's extensive narrative differently from the novels.
Fans are eagerly awaiting answers about Jamie's ghost, a mystery that has been lingering since the show's debut episode.
