A staple of some cult-classic British shows over the past two decades, Matt Berry was already a familiar face to many, but after being at the heart of one of the most recent TikTok trends, he's blowing up for a whole other reason.

The internet has been collectively scratching its head after discovering the surprising identity of the artist behind a song going viral in the most recent social media trend, is actually the beloved sitcom star.

The song in question is the extremely catchy, heartwarming and somewhat emotional "Take My Hand" which was originally released way back in 2011 on the actor's Witchhazel album.

While it gathered some attention at the time, the tune is probably best known as the theme song to Berry's eccentric comedy sitcom Toast of London, which first aired in 2013 and ran for three seasons.

However having disappeared into the ether for almost a decade, in recent months it has blown up as the backing for a huge online trend.

The trend doing the rounds on social media is to create an almost highlight real of the best aspects of everyday life with the title "I almost forgot that this was the whole point".

Being shared, posted and re-posted thousands of times the song has been cast into almost instant popularity now being streamed nearly 18 million times on Spotify.

But with his acting voice and singing voice a far cry away from each other, the screams of "Fatherrr!" when he played Douglas Reynholm in the IT Crowd or his endlessly shared gags as Lazlo Cravensworth in the vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows bear no resemblance to his soft singing voice - leaving many fans baffled to find out they are come from the same man.

In a clip that has now been viewed two million times on TikTok, @ethannneville posted: "When I first heard this song [Take My Hand] I thought it was a phenomenal piece of art.

"Then I learn the guy singing it is none other than the comedic genius and talented actor Matt Berry. You're telling me that the same guy who shouts 'New York Citehhh'[in What We Do In The Shadows] is a beautiful singer songwriter.

Ethan wasn't the only one shocked at the link with fans pouring into the comments to share their surprise.

One posted: "WHAT?? How am I just finding this out, I’ve loved this song for years," while another replied: "You’re telling me the same Matt Berry from the IT crowd? Like… FATHURRRRRRR?".

The interest in his songs is something that has caused Berry to return to music with his new album "Heard Noises" being released just months ago and shortly after the conclusion of his landmark role in What We Do In The Shadows.

Speaking to Prog on his return to music Berry said: "I turned 50 on the last day I filmed. So that was a significant day for me.

"I hadn’t done it consciously, but everything I’d been writing from the year before was all geared around that. When I look back, it’s all pointing in that direction. I think certain things happen to you that force you to progress."
