Prince Andrew was forced to step back from royal duties after his disastrous 2019 Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis. The 65-year-old, who is King Charles's younger brother, made a surprise appearance at the Royal Family's Easter Matins service on Sunday morning.

He was joined by his former wife and the mother of his two daughters, Sarah Ferguson. His surprise appearance came after Andrew decided they should not attend the Firm's Christmas Day celebrations last year. Their absence came after his reported link with alleged Chinese spy Yang Tengbo emerged.

Andrew's interview six years ago focused on his friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which eventually led to his removal as a working royal. Andrew no longer holds any public role or patronage and cannot use his HRH title. Andrew has strenuously denied any allegations against him. So what do you think? Easter Sunday, which is known as a private royal event rather than an official engagement, is often deemed one of the biggest events in the royal calendar.

Andrew's association with Mr Yang seems to have abruptly ended his already limited inclusion in public events.

The royal is not expected to join his family again in public - this is outside of any future weddings and funerals.

Speaking back in 2019, shortly after his disastrous interview, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams voiced that he believed the Duke of York would step back "forever".

Disussing the royal with talkRADIO host Julia Hartley-Brewer, he said: "Oh I think undoubtedly forever, at least for the foreseeable future is absolutely the case with so many questions still unanswered. An enormous decision the [late] Queen and [King] Charles would have agreed it is impossible for him to continue.

"And it had reached a point of meltdown, remember his links to 200 organisations, remember also the fact that frankly the sharks were circling and it was absolutely clear that he had become an object of derision. You need some gravitas to be a royal, heaven knows that matters reached levels where he may have hoped to hang on but it really was impossible. It was affecting the Monarchy very, very seriously, it was part of the election debate and not flatteringly so."
