Spain has long held the title of being the top dog when it comes to a sunny holiday but with rising tensions regardinovertourismmany holiday makers are looking for alternative European spots. As tourists now seek pastures new, recent data reveals the impact this has already had in Spain as the European country is no longer the most desired spot for British tourists. In fact, Brit tourists are said to be "increasingly opting" to rush and cancel their Spain holidays due to the rising anti-visitor protests.

One analysis compiled by One Sure Insurance took this one step further and analysed popular flight searches to reveal which two cities have now knocked Spain off the top spot and are now deemed the most-sought after European destinations by Brit tourists.

According to One Sure Insurance, the most sought-after European destinations include:

  1. Amsterdam - 42,000 searches
  2. Paris - 26,000 searches
  3. Barcelona - 20,000 searches
  4. Edinburgh - 16,000 searches
  5. Rome - 14,000 searches
  6. Budapest - 11,000 searches
  7. Krakow - 11,000 searches
  8. Milan - 9,700 searches
  9. Istanbul - 9,300 searches
  10. Athens - 7,100 searches

The analysis revealed that Barcelona in Spain has dropped from first place to third on the list as experts further explained how many tourists are now looking elsewhere for their holidays than Spain.

The analysis also interestingly revealed how cities such as Krakow, Athens and Budapest have moved up the popularity list.

Overall, Amsterdam and Paris held the top spots and were the two most desirable European cities to holiday in with Amsterdam winning by a landslide.

“We’re seeing a trend of more adventurous travellers who are looking to explore beyond the usual hotspots,” said a One Sure Insurance spokesperson.

"While cities like Paris and Rome continue to dominate, there’s an increasing interest in destinations that offer a unique blend of history, culture, and cost-effectiveness."

“Britons are looking to avoid over-tourism protests and are considering staycations as an alternative to travelling abroad.

The spokesperson added how many Brits are moving away from the “usual beach holiday locations” to more city vibes as they offer “not only history and culture, but also a fresh experience.”

The spokesperson added: "Seeing Edinburgh rise to fourth place reflects the growing appreciation for local heritage, too.
