Tragic footage has been released by New Mexico cops that shows the last hours of Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy Arakawa. Betsy, 65, died from a rare hantavirus in February 2025, and was found dead alongside her Hollywood star husband, 95, who is thought to have died a week later from heart disease complications and Alzheimer’s. Their dog, Zinna, was also found dead and “mummified” at the scene from dehydration and starvation, while two other family dogs survived.
Now footage has been released of Betsy’s final hours on February 11, when she went shopping in Santa Fe. CCTV footage showed her wearing blue jeans and a dark coat, as well as a face mask, as she headed to a Sprouts Grocery Market self-checkout to buy necessities at around 4pm that day. Later, she headed to Shine Pet Food to pick up some items for her pooches.
Betsy was on her own and was able to walk in and out of both stores without any visible effect on her health.
It comes as police bodycam footage was released by Santa Fe authorities which showed officers discovering the grim state of the Hackman home, with one dog left standing guard over Betsy’s body.
Gene’s cause of death was determined to be hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s listed as a contributing factor. Arakawa, meanwhile, died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rodent-borne disease.
Police photos from the scene also showed handwritten notes exchanged between Gene and Betsy, with the star referring to his wife as “lovely girl” and signing off: “Love, G”.
One in particular read: “Good morning. Happy several days after your birthday. Sorry still about the dinner and having to ask for your help, although it was appreciated. Love you and the guys, G.”
Another note saw Gene write about his ongoing medical treatments, penning: “Ho, ho, I am off to see the wizard, the wiz of achie, pokie. She stabs me here and stabs me there, she stabs me almost everywhere (almost). But I survive because after I am still alive. (But sometimes just barely).”
