Jeffrey Runnings, the founding member, bassist and vocalist of indie band For Against, has died after a battle with stage 4 cancer at the age of 61. The band's longtime record label, Independent Project Records confirmed the news in a statement saying, “Jeffrey Runnings was not only a good friend and an outstanding musician and songwriter, but someone whose life revolved around music,” said the labels founder and co-owner Bruce Licher.
“Jeff was always enthusiastically sharing music that he thought his friends would enjoy, and for years he would send me handwritten letters, often accompanied by records he thought I should have or a mixtape he’d made that he thought I should hear. Even now, in the middle of the second decade of the 21st century, when he sent me his new album to hear for the first time, it was on a cassette tape that he mailed through the post. I couldn’t have asked for anything more special. His unique voice will be missed on so many levels.”
Tributes flooded in for the star as news broke. "Sad to find out that Jeffrey Runnings passed away last month. I discovered For Against years ago while randomly Youtube hopping and really got into their stuff. I recommend giving the Echelons album a try," one fan penned on X.
"Thank you Jeffrey, for all the beautiful music that you and your bandmates have brought forth into the world for us to immerse ourselves in. Know that you are loved, and that your music speaks deeply to many of us," another commented.
A third added: "Sorry to hear Jeffrey Runnings, bassist/vocalist for Nebraskan post-punk band For Against, has died at 61. The band combined the bass heavy post punk sounds of Joy Division w/ dream pop. 1987 song “Echelons” by For Against . #RIPJeffreyRunnings."
