Rory McIlroy triumphed at The Masters on Sunday, with the Northern Irish golfing sensation finally conquering his Augusta demons and completing a career grand slam at 35. Yet, Rory's off-course life often eclipses his sporting achievements. About 11 months ago, the golf world was stunned when Rory filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll just before the US PGA Championship, after seven years of marriage.

Speculation about their relationship status was rife when they were spotted getting cosy during a dinner at Dublin's trendy Fade Street Social in October 2014. However, it was reported that Meghan and the sports star remained firmly in the friend zone. Around the same time, it was rumoured that Meghan was romantically involved with chef Cory Vitiello. Wozniacki engagement called off.

The romantic journey between golf superstar McIlroy and former tennis champion Caroline Wozniacki seemed destined for a fairytale ending. They got engaged in December 2013 after three years of dating and supporting each other in their respective sports. However, their dream wedding fell apart dramatically fast. Only months after the glamorous New Year's Eve proposal – and allegedly after wedding invitations had been sent out – Rory decided to call it quits.

The Times reported that McIlroy ended their engagement to Wozniacki via a brief phone call, which lasted only three minutes. Wozniacki initially thought it was a joke. In a candid 2017 interview with the Irish Independent, Rory McIlroy reflected on his previous high-profile relationship by declaring, "I thought at the time that being with someone that was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer. But it isn't, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world."

The love story of Rory and Erica Stoll turned into fairy-tale nuptials in 2017 when the golfing sensation married his PGA-employed sweetheart at Ireland's opulent Ashworth Castle. The A-list guests, including Coldplay's Chris Martin and One Direction's Niall Horan, were serenaded by no less than Stevie Wonder and Ed Sheeran. Rory, sharing once more with the Irish Independent, praised Erica's grounded nature, suggesting a stark contrast with past experiences, as he noted, "We met when she was working for the PGA of America, and renting a condo in Palm Beach, and I found it refreshing being with someone who was living a normal life rather than, 'Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!'".

"I could speak to her about anything, we ended up spending a bit of time together and realised that there was something more there. I love that she knows everything about me, and there was no judgement there. There was no judgement from day one, which is huge, because that's very hard to find for someone in my position."

However, their happiness appeared to be short-lived, as news emerged that Rory had filed for divorce after seven years of marriage. The filing was made in Palm Beach County State Court in Florida on Monday, May 13, 2024. "Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed," read a statement from his team. "They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."

But just a month later, Rory reportedly withdrew his divorce application, according to DailyMail. The publication reported that Erica failed to respond or appoint an attorney by the June 2 deadline.

Two days before the U.S. Open, Rory addressed the speculation, confirming they were indeed back together. In an exclusive statement to the Guardian, he disclosed: "There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool's game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning."
