Kate Garraway shared an emotional recollection with her late husband, Derek Draper, on Tuesday's (15 April) episode of ITV's Lorraine while stepping in for the regular host Lorraine Kelly.
While at the helm of the programme, Kate reminisced about the touching moment she told Derek she would adopt his surname upon marriage, a revelation that moved him to tears.
She told viewers about the time they were at John Lewis sorting their wedding list when an employee enquired about the surname to use for her. "Derek burst into tears!" she revealed.
"He was so happy. He was sobbing away, saying 'I can't believe you'd do that for me, it's so wonderful'. I was like, 'I'd absolutely love to, if you're prepared to marry me, then of course I'll take your name.'"
However, Kate admitted she never actually made the change, recounting how a problem with a flight booking because her passport listed 'Draper' prompted her to reconsider the surname alteration.
"I had Draper on my passport, and of course, they wouldn't let me on board," she shared, echoing the sentiment of her guests that changing surnames is becoming less common among women due to official documentation and professional reasons.
Having tied the knot with Derek in 2005, Kate also served as the stand-in presenter on Monday (14 April), which marked over ten years since she last presented the ITV show, reports BristolLive.
In that stint, she gave viewers a heartfelt update on her children, Darcey and Billy, in the wake of their father Derek's passing 15 months prior.
In a conversation with Dr Hilary Jones, Kate disclosed: "Billy is doing his GCSEs at the moment, and they start really early. In my day, which was O Level, it was all June, but now most of his are over by the end of May."
She added: "He did break his arm two weeks ago in three places, but thankfully, it was his left arm, so he can still write."
Updating on her daughter, Kate beamed: "Darcey is doing great. She's in her first year of uni now," before revealing her subjects with a hint of awe: "Law and Criminology, so that's a bit scary, isn't it? She's up in Manchester."
Tragically, Kate lost her husband Derek, a former political aide, in January 2024 after an extended health battle that commenced with a Covid-19 diagnosis back in March 2020.
Lorraine airs at 9pm on ITV1 on weekdays
