Travel

Visiting France as a tourist is always a pleasure for the senses. Many of the countries' cities feature an architectural blend of all eras, street artists, young people enjoying their time outside, the sounds of cutlery from restaurant terraces squeezed next to each other in narrow streets, and the relaxed atmosphere of a culture that prioritises quality lifestyle and long hours of joie de vivre.

And this is not only a Parisian experience. The city of Toulouse was listed in Lonely Planet’s list of top destinations to visit in 2025 - and for a good reason. Located in southwestern France 150 kilometres from the Mediterranean and 230 kilometres from the Atlantic, Toulouse ticks off the checkboxes of a well-spent French holiday.

Toulouse is often dubbed "Paris in miniature" due to its charming blend of vibrant culture, elegant architecture, and a lively atmosphere similar to the French capital.

The city is famously called La Ville Rose - the Pink City -  thanks to its distinctive terra-cotta brick buildings. The rosy architecture dates back to the 12th century, beginning with landmarks like the Basilica of Saint-Sernin and Le Capitole, giving the city its unique, unified glow.

One of the most beautiful experiences of the city includes simple river walks. The fourth largest city in France spreads out on the River Garonne - just as romantic as the Parisian Seine, and the atmosphere well reflects the vibrant life Toulouse offers.

The Quai de la Daurade, a picturesque riverside promenade, serves as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Throughout the day, a diverse set of characters pass by. You’ll come across students sunbathing on the grass, artists capturing the views, joggers and cyclists adding to the dynamic energy of the space. The area is surrounded by an array of cafes and restaurants, their terraces spilling out towards the river.

Toulouse is also the UNESCO City of Music, with strong musical heritage and commitment to supporting local musicians. Today, music runs through Toulouse’s veins just as it did in medieval times, when the city’s counts championed Occitan-singing troubadours who shaped the soundscape of the Middle Ages. From electrifying live gigs at Le Saint des Seins and jazz nights at Le Taquin to elegant classical performances at the Théâtre du Capitole, the city's vibrant music scene hits every note.

Just like many other French destinations, Toulouse is a culinary haven, where local markets and restaurants showcase the flavors of southern France. From the hearty cassoulet - a traditional bean and meat stew - to a tempting selection of artisanal cheeses and regional wines, the city's cuisine is deeply rooted in its rich heritage. Food lovers can wander through markets like Marché Victor Hugo, sampling the finest produce and local specialties.

Beyond its architectural, musical, and culinary landmarks, Toulouse boasts museums like the Muséum de Toulouse, Les Abattoirs for modern art, the aerospace-focused Aeroscopia, the Fondation Bemberg, or the archaeological Musée Saint-Raymond. And, the fine arts Musée des Augustins is set to reopen in 2025.
