A garden expert has issued a crucial tip that will ensure your seeds have the best chance of growing to their full potential. It is the time of year when gardens will begin to flourish as more photons from the sun trigger a symphony of photosynthesis across the UK. Those with green fingers will want to plant their favourite flowers to make sure their green spaces look their best, for their own satisfaction and to impress any neighbours and house guests. Sewing your chosen seeds is a crucial step, and affects how well the plant grows.
Craig Wilson, founder of Gardeners Dream, a site selling gardening essentials, has provided some invaluable insight on this front. This concerns the depth that seeds are best planted. Mr Wilson said: “Seeds need the right conditions to grow, meaning you need the right environment. A light, well-draining soil mix with good aeration is ideal for most seeds."
He added: "Avoid planting seeds too deep, as seeds need a good amount of oxygen to thrive.
"Most should only be covered with a thin layer of soil about twice their size in depth.
"If buried too deep, they may not get enough oxygen or light, and this will impact germination.”
The expert also highlighted that gardeners should avoid over or underwatering.
Mr Wilson said: “Overwatering your seeds can cause them to rot, while underwatering can dry them out before they sprout.
"Try to keep your soil consistently moist but not soggy.
"Using a spray bottle to mist the surface can maintain moisture without getting the seeds too wet over a longer period of time.”
