The head of the US military base in Greenland has been fired after she reportedly sent an email distancing herself from comments made by Vice President JD Vance. The US Space Force said on Thursday that Colonel Susannah Meyers had been removed as commander of Pituffik Space Base “for loss of confidence in her ability to lead”.
She was relieved of her duties on Thursday - the same day a story by Military.com claimed she had emailed personnel days after Mr Vance’s visit to the base last month where he criticised Denmark. In the email, Col Meyers reportedly wrote that she "spent the weekend thinking about Friday's visit -- the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you”. “I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base,” she wrote, according to Military.com.
"I commit that, for as long as I am lucky enough to lead this base, all of our flags will fly proudly -- together.”
The comments were sent to all personnel on the base, including those from Denmark and Greenland, and were confirmed as accurate by the Space Force, Military.com reported.
Announcing Col Meyers’ dismissal, the Space Force added: “Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties.”
On X, Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell shared a screenshot of the Space Force statement with the caption: “Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump's agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense.”
During Mr Vance’s visit to Pituffik base, he claimed Denmark has “not done a good job by the people of Greenland”.
“Denmark has not kept pace and devoted the resources necessary to keep this base, to keep our troops, and in my view, to keep the people of Greenland safe from a lot of very aggressive incursions from Russia, from China and other nations,” the Vice President claimed.
Greenland is the world’s biggest island and a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.
The Trump administration has regularly expressed its wish to take control of Greenland, citing it is needed for national security purposes.
Col Meyers had been the base’s commander since July and has been replaced by Colonel Shawn Lee.
