The A1 was shut down in both directions following a three-vehicle pile-up that resulted in a car mounting the pavement and crashing into a cafe this morning. The incident occurred around 7:45am, with police cordoning off the scene and debris strewn across the road. Emergency services were on the scene promptly, treating four individuals for injuries. One of the vehicles involved ploughed into an outdoor seating area of a nearby cafe, police said.
The accident occurred on the A1 in Islington's Upper Street area, a popular spot for shopping and dining with numerous restaurants and cafes. Due to the crash, a section of the road from Florence Street to the junction with Islington Park Street and Canonbury Lane has been closed.
Traffic congestion was severe in the area, particularly from St Mary's Church to Ottolenghi and the Post Office. A diversion affecting bus routes 4, 19, 30, and 43 was put in place while emergency teams worked at the scene.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: "We are currently dealing with a three-vehicle road traffic collision on Upper Street in Islington. One vehicle collided with outdoor seating at a nearby cafe. Officers remain at the scene and are working to assess the circumstances."
