While the UK boasts a variety of stunning seaside destinations, one town has recently emerged as the top choice for those considering a move in 2025. With its combination of great weather, good value for money, and plenty of character, it’s no wonder this Kent coastal gem has captured the hearts of would-be movers.
Margate, a picturesque town many Brits flock to during summer heatwaves, has been named the UK’s best coastal town for relocation this year, according to a study by My Baggage. The town earned a stellar relocation score of 98.83, surpassing other well-known spots like Whitby in Yorkshire, which claimed second place with a score of 97.60. The secret to Margate’s top ranking is all about balance, with Paul Stewart, CEO of My Baggage, stating: “Margate leads convincingly as the UK’s premier coastal relocation destination for 2025.
“Its first-place ranking demonstrates the perfect balance of affordability, quality of life, and seaside charm.”
With 1,846 annual sunlight hours, moderate rainfall, and solid broadband speeds, Margate combines the best of coastal living without the sky-high costs often associated with other popular seaside spots.
While the weather in some coastal towns can be unpredictable, Margate offers a delightful mix of sunshine and mild rainfall (612.64mm per year), which means more days to enjoy the beach or stroll along the seafront.
Stewart stressed: “Margate represents the ideal coastal lifestyle without the premium costs associated with other seaside locations.”
Kent’s rising reputation as a prime coastal destination is clear, with two towns, including Whitstable, also landing in the top three of the study.
It’s becoming evident that Kent’s combination of beauty, access to London, and a growing sense of community is making it the place to be for those looking to relocate.
Margate has a lot to offer residents, including plenty of bright days to spend at the beach or enjoying outdoor activities - a huge perk for those looking to escape the gloomy winter months.
For culture enthusiasts, the town is home to several art and entertainment hot spots, such as the Turner Contemporary Gallery, a space for modern art, and the historic Dreamland amusement park.
It also regularly hosts festivals like Soul and Dreamland, an Old Town market, and musical and comedy performances, keeping things lively for locals, who can, at the same time, enjoy the slower pace of life by the sea.
Margate Main Sands is a popular beach stretch cherished by holiday-goers since the 18th century, which even during high tide, has plenty of shoreline for beach sports and basking in the sun.
