A viral challenge has seen a YouTuber shell out an astonishing £150 for a luxury melon from Harrods as part of a taste test.
Online star Robbie Knox wanted to see how the luxury fruit compared to a £1 equivalent bought from supermarket Asda.
The experiment, posted on his TikTok account @megarobbieknox, sees Robbie alongside musician Alfie Indra, who declares his adoration for the fruit, saying he "loves melon". But did this pricey fruit live up to its hefty price tag?
The blind taste test captured their candid reactions without knowledge of the melons' origins. Amidst laughter and scrutiny, they first eyed one melon they described as looking "dry", while the other exuded a seemingly "juicy" allure.
Upon tasting, the dry appearance proved true to the experience for them. However, the "juicy" melon left them marvelling with Robbie gushing: "It's so amazing. It's like they combined what it is to be a melon into one melon" and Alfie proclaiming it was the "best melon" he'd "ever had". They wagered that such exquisite flavour must hail from Harrods rather than Asda, and indeed, their hunch was spot-on.
The reveal saw the Japanese Crown melon from Harrods solidify its reputation, thoroughly impressing Robbie and Alfie. Robbie gleefully presented the luxurious box, heralding: "This, Alfie, is a Japanese Crown melon".
The Japanese Crown melon is a luxurious fruit from Japan, renowned for its succulent texture, sweet taste, and distinct aroma, earning the nickname 'king of fruits' for its exceptional quality. Adding to its exclusivity, the fruit is packaged with a "velvet melon cushion" within the box, amusing the hosts.
Robbie explained that each tree yields only one of these precious fruits, concentrating all its nutrients into a single melon and contributing to its juiciness.
Initially unaware of the price, Alfie cringed when Robbie revealed he paid £1.88 for the Asda melon. His concern grew as he considered the possibility of the expensive melon costing £5,000 and being offered another taste.
He guessed the Harrods melon was £85, stating: "And that's just me being nuts," thinking it would be cheaper. Robbie asked Alfie how much he'd pay, and Alfie replied: "I would genuinely pay like £25 for that" However, he was mortified by its £150 price tag.
Robbie joked that the £150 melon had "completely ruined melons" for them, rendering regular melons unpalatable. The comments section echoed these sentiments, with one user stating: "I don't care how juicy it is, a melon should not cost £150", while another joked: "Do Harrods have a yellow sticker section?".
