With the spring Bank Holidays fast approaching, knowing how to get the most into your suitcase ahead of any upcoming trips is essential, especially if you want to avoid any excess luggage fees.

Sticking to hand luggage might sound like a good (and cheap) idea in theory, but you might find that deliberating between which shoes to bring or squashing a hat on top of your clothes is more hassle than it’s worth. Even if you do manage to squeeze everything in, you might find that your bag weighs more than the 10kg allowance enforced by more airlines. While most airlines have their own rules and regulations around cabin bags, some carriers charge anywhere from £50 upwards for hang luggage that’s oversized and weighs more than 10kg.

Knowing how to pack to get the most out of your suitcase can help avoid any extra charges once you get to the airport, or having to chuck items away and repack, and one lifestyle blogger has shared her clever tips for more efficient packing.

In a video posted on TikTok by Sophie Webb, who runs the account @what.sophie.does, the blogger shared the “packing hacks you need to know".

Showing how she rolls her clothes up instead of folding them, Sophie uses a few more tricks to get the most out of her suitcase, starting with packing her shoes in a shower cap.

This also doubles up as an effective way to pack socks, simply stuffing them into the shoes, making the space more compact, and prevents shoes leaving dirt in your case or clothes, while maintaining the shape of shoes during your travels.

An essential for any sunny holiday, stacking hats within each other can help maintain their shape and also create more space for clothes.

Nestling small items like swimsuits or underwear in the crown of the hat provides some extra space in your case and helps them keep their shape.

If you prefer to use your own pillow case, bringing a spare one can also come in handy for when you return from your trip. Use this to put your dirty clothes in on the way home, keeping it compact in your case, and separate from clothes you might not have worn while away.

For her final two tips, Sophie recommended putting clingfilm in between bottles and lids to stop them from leaking into your case. She also showed how you can pin earrings to a button, keeping them in one place in your bag, and a handy way to use spare buttons that often seem to accumulate around the house.
