Second Lady of the United States and wife to JD Vance Usha Vance has given an insight into what life has been like since Donald Trump’s election. Revealing how the Vice President can be “very lonely”, Usha Vance says she is her husband’s “closest adviser” during her first interview since taking on the role.

Mrs Vance, 39, explained how their “lives are not normal” while chatting with The Free Press writer Peter Savodnik. As one of the youngest women to become the Second Lady, she explained that her reception into the “MAGA world” has been positive, despite not being “from a particularly wealthy background, not from a very fashion-oriented background personally or professionally”. The Second Lady and her husband reside in their US Naval Observatory home in Washington, although their communication has been boiled down to mainly text messages between meetings, she said.

“I don’t know that he’s asking me for advice so much as it can be a very lonely, lonely world not to share with someone,” she said.

JD Vance, 40, has had increased media attention since taking on the role of second in command to the president compared to his predecessors. During a night out to a concert at the Kennedy Centre, the couple were booed by crowds in the audience.

“It was about 20 or 30 seconds of some people booing and delaying the start of the concert, right as the conductor is about to come out, and there were a few other people clapping,” Mrs Vance said.

“You ruined this place!” one audience member shouted. They spoke in reference to Mr Trump’s decision to replace the chairman of the Kennedy Centre board with himself.

Dismissing the unusual vocal protest as brief, she explained that Mr Vance “waved at them, and then we enjoyed the show”.

The incident at the Kennedy Centre isn't the only one to have targeted Mr Vance in recent weeks. After his bust-up with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House in late February, the Vice President had to face pro-Ukraine demonstrators during a trip to Vermont.

His controversial visit to Greenland last month was also scaled back amid reported fears of protests in the Danish territory.

Speaking on how her life has drastically changed after Mr Trump chose Mr Vance as his second in command, she said a “switch flipped”.

“The day before JD was selected [as Trump’s running-mate] — I did not know he was going to be selected — I was working as a lawyer, and I had the wardrobe of a person with three children who likes to do things outdoors, who has a dog, who doesn’t like things to be too precious,” she said. “And then a switch flipped, and it’s not like it came with a whole new wardrobe and stylist and everything.”

Ms Vance was born in California and is the daughter of Indian immigrants. She has degrees from the prestigious universities Cambridge and Yale. The latter is where she met her now husband in 2010 during a discussion group on “social decline in white America”.
