Jon Kay was back on TV screens on Tuesday (8 April) on BBC Breakfast alongside co-host Sally Nugent. The two presenters brought the latest headlines to TV viewers, with topics varying from politics to crime.

Jon and Sally shared a very joyful story about the birth of a baby girl in London during Tuesday's episode.

Grace Davidson, 36, gave birth to daughter Amy Isabel on 27 February, making her the first woman in the UK to give birth after a womb transplant. She was diagnosed with a rare condition as a teenager, which meant she did not have a uterus.

Grace's sister Amy Purdie donated her womb during an eight-hour operation in 2023. Baby Amy was born via planned NHS cesarean section.

Consultant transplant surgeon Isabel Quiroga and consultant gynecological surgeon Professor Richard Smith were interviewed on BBC Breakfast regarding the huge medical breakthrough.

"We're seeing a lovely picture of baby Amy Isabel right now. Our hearts are melting. Congratulations to the family, and congratulations to both of you!" Jon exclaimed.

Isabel opened up about the groundbreaking surgery and how a donor was selected, giving an insight into how womb transplants with living donors work.

"So, currently, we are doing living donor transplants from relatives, so mother, sister, or other family members. Or, you have to have a very close relationship to donate with your donor. This follows exactly the same protocol as any other living donation in the UK, it's very closely monitored. Very well regulated in the UK by the Human Tissue Authority," she told Jon and Sally.

Grace and partner Angus named their baby daughter Amy after her auntie, and her middle name is Isabel, in tribute to the surgeon.

Quizzing her on the emotional tribute, Jon asked Isabel: "What did you think when you heard that?"

Isabel admitted she felt tearful upon learning about Grace and Angus' decision, branding it an "honour."

"I was not expecting that! Actually, I didn't hear it until one of my colleagues said 'Did you hear that?!'" Isabel revealed. "I think a couple of tears came to my eyes with that. A great moment, huge pride. An honour to be recognised in that way."

Around 10 more women are going through the process of gaining approval for a womb transplant in the UK, which costs around £25,000. The programme is funded by Womb Transplant UK.

The charity has permission for 10 deceased donor transplants and five living donor transplants. It is hoped that the NHS may be able to provide funding in the future.

BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One on weekdays from 6am
