A unique pub and bookshop in Cornwall has been named as one of the UK's top 10 boozers in a new book. Beer Breaks in Britain: 30 Places to Explore and Drink Good Beer, penned by Phil Mellows, a head judge for The Publican Awards and Great British Pub Awards, and travel journalist Kate Simon, lists Beerwolf Books in Falmouth among the country's best.
Mellows describes the venue: "Walk up a flight of stairs off Falmouth's main shopping street and you'll find yourself in the middle of a well-stocked library. Turn around, and you'll see the bar, with a half-dozen cask pumps and a good selection of craft beers on the taps. Plenty of seating, too, for you to drink and read."
Beerwolf Books offers an extensive range of second-hand fiction and quality non-fiction books. Customers can browse and buy a book before settling down with a drink. The unique establishment has been a fixture in Falmouth since 2012, nestled amongst the shops on Market Street.
There are also board games, which visitors can play for free, and a pinball machine. "For a great super-chilled atmosphere to spend an hour or three, where you can also bring your own food, what a way to spend some of your day," Cornish Secrets said of the pub. "Quirky, forward-thinking, with lots going on, it is one of those secret places we all love to discover."
TripAdvisor visitors have been waxing lyrical about a certain pub's "cosy atmosphere" and available board games, not to mention its inviting courtyard featuring outdoor seating. They've been charmed by the establishment's "quirky bookstore", an impressive selection of "good choice of real ales" and have described it as a "must visit if you love beer and books."
Beer Breaks in Britain: 30 Places to Explore and Drink Good Beer "joins the dots between beer and travel" and focuses on 30 destinations across the country, including breweries, tap rooms, pubs and bars, beer festivals and circuits.
Fanny's Ale House in Saltaire, West Yorkshire; Farmer's Arms in Lowick Green, Cumbria; Burton Bridge Inn in Burton Upon Trent, Staffordshire; Fat Cat in Norwich; Dyffryn Arms in Pontfaen, Pembrokeshire; Fez in Margate, Kent; Laurieston Bar in Glasgow; Star Inn in Bath; and Royal Oak in Borough, London are among the other distinguished pubs to make the top ten list.
The only other South West pub featured in the top ten list is Bath's historic Star Inn. The pub, which was first licensed in 1760, still serves beer from a jug and offers complimentary snuff. It still has many original features, such as its 18th-century bar fittings and wooden benches, and customers also enjoy the vintage telephone on one of the walls.
