King Charles has paid a sweet tribute to his mother the late Queen today on Mother’s Day. To mark the occasion, the monarch, 76, took to social media with a photograph of himself as a young boy with Queen Elizabeth II and his sister Princess Anne, 74. The black and white photograph was taken at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in 1956.
The social media post, which was posted on official Royal Family social media platforms, had a sweet caption. It read: “Wishing all mothers, and those who are missing theirs today, a peaceful Mothering Sunday.”
As well as sharing a photograph of his own late mother, the King also shared a photograph of Queen Camilla’s late mother Rosalind Shand.
In the photo, Rosalind could be seen holding Camilla’s son Tom Parker-Bowles.
While Camilla, 77, rarely speaks about her own mother in public, she did once open up about her mother’s death in 2011.
She said her mother, who died from osteoporosis in 1994, “literally shrank” as a result of the disease.
Camilla wrote in The Daily Mail in 2011: “Seeing someone you love die slowly, in agony, and knowing nothing about the disease that killed them is heart-breaking.
“My family and I watched in horror as my mother quite literally shrank in front of our eyes. She lost about eight inches in height and became so bent that she was unable to digest her food properly, leaving her with no appetite at all.
"The local GP was kind and sympathetic but he, like us, was able to do little to alleviate the terrible pain Mama suffered so stoically.”
