Gene Hackman and his late wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead at their compound in Santa Fe, New Mexico on February 26. Hackman and Arakawa's bodies still haven't been claimed a month after the couple were found dead. The Daily Mail has reported Hackman and Arakawa's remains are still being held by the Office of the Medical Examiner of New Mexico.
According to the publication, the iconic actor and his wife were listed as "unclaimed decedents". However, the Medical Examiner office updates the list each Monday. It has since been suggested the supposed snub could fuel claims Hackman was estranged from his three children Leslie Ann, Christopher and Elizabeth, who all live in California.
Weeks after their autopsies were carried out, it is still unclear if their remains will be buried in New Mexico, where the couple has lived for decades, or transported across state lines.
The police believe the late actor died around February 18 at age 95 from severe heart disease, with advanced Alzheimer’s disease as a "significant" contributing factor.
While Arakawa died aged 65, died a week before Hackman from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is a severe respiratory illness caused by contact with infected rodents.
Hackman shared his three children with his first wife Faye Maltese.
It is still unclear how the late actor's $80 million fortune will be divided after the sum was due to be left to his wife.
In her will, Arakawa designated her assets to a trust, to be distributed to charitable organisations and the settlement of medical debts.
It has since been revealed Arakawa is survived by her 91-year-old mother, Yoshie Feaster.
A New Mexico court last week granted a temporary restraining order against the release of any photographs and video showing Hackman and his wife the inside of their home.
A hearing on the matter is due to be held on March 31.
