James Blunt hit back at TV presenter Paddy McGuinness after he reflected on being clinically depressed and likened it to being at the singer’s concert. Earlier this month, the comedian was interviewed on RTE One and opened up about his past struggles with mental health.
Explaining what clinical depression feels like, Paddy said: “The best way to describe clinical depression is depression on steroids. “I'm not being very fair to him, but it's almost being at a James Blunt concert and they've closed the exits. Then when you finally get one open and burst through it, you're in another James Blunt concert. He's a lovely fella by the way, but it's the only analogy I could think of.”
During the chat, Paddy admitted he didn’t realise he had clinical depression and added: "My wife at the time said, 'You’ve not been yourself for ages.’
“I thought I was just a bit stressed at work, a bit irritable. Clearly, I'd taken a massive turn.”
However, upon hearing Paddy's comments, James responded on his X page with a humorous tweet promoting his tour. “Suddenly, clinical depression sounds quite fun. Tickets available here.”
Fans were impressed by the singer’s comeback as they took to the comments section to praise the You’re Beautiful hitmaker.
“As ever, Blunt defends with a straight bat and hits a boundary. Stylish chap that he is,” one user wrote.
“It’s nice to be mentioned,” joked another fan, while a third said: “I know it is a joke, but seriously, he has clearly never been to a James Blunt concert. Absolute joy.”
As one remarked: “So nice to know some of us still have a sense of humour!”
“Don’t forget to block the Exits or it won’t be fun,” joked another.
Paddy also revealed that his ex-wife Christine McGuinness was the first to spot the warning signs as he confessed to being oblivious to his own mental health issues, saying: “You can be as low as low can be and it's the people around you that tell you."
