While Greece is famous for its dazzling blue waters and whitewashed villages, some of its islands remain blissfully undiscovered. One such hidden gem is Astypalaia, a breathtaking destination in the Dodecanese that offers all the beauty of Mykonos, without the crowds.

Situated at the westernmost edge of the Dodecanese island group, Astypalaia is often described as a bridge between the Cycladic and Dodecanese cultures. The island's distinct butterfly-like shape, formed by a narrow landstrip connecting its two halves, adds to its geographical charm.

Astypalaia's capital and main port, Chora, is a stunning sight, featuring whitewashed houses with blue doors and wooden balconies. The town is crowned by Venetian Guerini Castle, a 13th century fortress offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

With the castle walls stand two striking churches, Panagia Evangelistria and Agios Georgios, their white domes gleaming against the deep blue sky.

Visitors to Chora can stroll along charming narrow streets lined with traditional windmills and local shops. Just below the castle, the Panagia Portaitissa church, one of the most beautiful in the Dodecanese, hosts an annual festival in mid-August, celebrating Greek culture with music, dancing, and traditional feasts.

For history enthusiasts, the island boasts the Narkisseios Municipal Library and an archaeological museum in Pera Gialos, where artefacts dating back to prehistoric times offer insight into Astypalaia’s rich past.

Astypalaia is home to pristine beaches and dramatic landscapes that remain untouched by mass tourism. Livadia, a picturesque seaside village, offers a lush valley of citrus groves and vineyards beside its beach.

More adventurous travellers can take a boat trip to Negros Cave at Vatses, where stunning rock formations create a mystical atmosphere.

The island’s eastern half, known as Exo Nisi, features Maltezana, a tranquil village with Hellenistic mosaics and historical sites. Further east, Vathy Bay provides a peaceful retreat, surrounded by vineyards and a narrow, fjord-like inlet that feels like a hidden paradise.

Astypalaia serves as a gateway to nearby islets such as Koutsomiti, Syrna, and Fokionisia, where visitors can discover secluded beaches and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

For travellers seeking an authentic Greek island experience without the crowds, Astypalaia is a dream come true. With its charming villages, historical sites, and unspoiled beaches, this island offers all the magic of Mykonos, just without the hustle and bustle.

Whether exploring ancient ruins, swimming in turquoise waters, or enjoying a traditional Greek meal by the sea, Astypalaia promises an unforgettable escape into Greece’s untouched beauty.
