The Quay Hotel and Spa is a four-star hotel with impressive sea views, a formidable castle as a neighbour and one of the UK's most beautiful national parks less than an hour away. The 80-room hotel boasts a variety of different room types suitable for everyone and the location is gorgeous, whether you’re visiting Conwy Castle, Eryri (Snowdonia) or the remarkable smallest house in Great Britain. The island of Anglesey is just 40 minutes away too.
The hotel is also home to a relaxing spa which offers a multitude of treatments and packages, The Cove Bar which offers light bites and the Ebb & Flow restaurant, which overlooks the historic castle and offers guests the very best of Welsh food, service and atmosphere.
The hotel has a variety of comfortable rooms to choose from, including Luxury Suites, Executive Rooms, Luxury Penthouse, Superior Rooms and Cosy Cove Rooms. Throughout the 80 bedrooms at the hotel, guests can relax with soothing coastal colours to enjoy a peaceful oasis away from everyday life.
Cosy Cove Rooms look out towards the Zen courtyard and feature a double bedroom, with prices starting from just £129 per night. Superior Rooms boast a calming view of the Marina or Zen courtyard, and they range from having a private outdoor space to a Juliet balcony, with prices starting from £169 per night. Dogs are also welcome into the Superior ground-floor rooms for just £25 per night.
Executive rooms offer stunning panoramic views across the Conwy Estuary, right across to Conwy Castle. Prices start from £209, and the majority of these rooms include a private balcony or terrace area with intimate seating. All rooms have a spacious en-suite with a bath and shower (or just a separate shower) with toiletries.
Fourteen Luxury Suites are also available to guests, with prices from £249, and are perfect for families with children as the lounge features a double sofa bed. Some of the rooms also offer a small dining area. The Luxury Penthouse contains a separate lounge that has floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a gorgeous view of the castle. It also comes complete with a private balcony, and prices start from £349.
I stayed in an Executive Deluxe Room, which boasted a private balcony with seating, where I watched the gorgeous sunset over the water. The room also offered 24-hour room service, coffee and tea-making facilities, complimentary bottled water, an in-room safe, a fridge, and a large wardrobe. The seating overlooking the view was also a nice touch and a chill-out area.
The bathroom featured a walk-in shower and separate bath, as well as a large sink overlooking the estuary. Whilst a vanity kit, shower cap and bubble bath would have been a nice touch due to staying in a spa hotel, the shower gel in the shower smelt delightful. The reception team were also really accommodating when there wasn’t any hand soap in my room and delivered it within minutes. This was definitely one of the nicest hotel rooms I’ve stayed in, thanks to the incredible location of the hotel.
The Cove Bar offers drinks and lighter food offerings, such as sandwiches, salads, soups and burgers. The prices are really reasonable and the staff were friendly and helpful when it came to ordering cocktails which weren’t very clear on the menu. The bar morphs into the main restaurant of the hotel, The Ebb & Flow Restaurant.
The award-winning Ebb & Flow restaurant offers delicious options featuring local produce and seasonal menus by their award-winning chef, and this was definitely a highlight of my stay. The menu is British with the occasional Asian or Moroccan twist. Dishes on the starter menu included rosemary foccacia with balsamic dipping oil, classic French beef onion soup, and minted Welsh lamb koftas with giant Moroccan couscous.
Main meal options included apricot and sage stuffed roast belly pork, pan roast chicken in sage butter with a mini chicken and leek pie with new potatoes, vegan chickpea, lentil and celeriac wellington in puff pastry with crushed new potatoes and greens. But my highlight came from the night's specials: I had slow-cooked beef, which just fell apart, paired with carrots, greens, red cabbage and tenderstem broccoli. It also came with thick-cut chips and a brandy jus for the beef, and it was one of the tastiest meals I’ve ever had. The waiters weren’t short of wine knowledge either and were super helpful in picking out the best pairings.
There are also plenty of desserts to choose from, including banana and caramel banoffee tart and steamed orange sponge pudding, but I went for the apple crumble Jersey cream cheesecake with a mango sorbet. The presentation was stunning and it tasted incredible, working perfectly with the tangy sorbet.
The New Spa at the Quay is open after extensive refurbishment and features a steam room, infrared sauna, traditional sauna and a Himalayan salt sauna as well as a pool and jacuzzi. The spa wasn’t busy at all and was very quiet and peaceful, with everyone enjoying the pool and sauna rooms.
I wish there were more than six beds around the pool as they were all taken by the time I arrived in the morning, but I have found this to be a common issue with spas across the UK as they lack space for large loungers. This meant I couldn’t properly relax and chill in the spa like I wanted to, but I still enjoyed my time, especially with the wellness area and foot spa.
The Himalayan sauna was particularly interesting as it had several benefits and was the largest sauna of them all, so it was very comfortable and relaxing with nice dim lighting.
The spa offers a variety of treatments too and I opted for a 25-minute back, neck and shoulders massage which helped me unwind and release lots of tension. The skilled therapist tailored the massage to my specific needs using products from Welsh beauty brand Oskia.
Following the treatment, I relaxed in the spa cafe and enjoyed a ham and cheese croissant followed by a fruit salad and a variety of cereals, yoghurts and fruits, which are included in some of the packages.
This was a nice end to the spa morning and not one I’ve seen in a lot of spas. The Spa At The Quay offers a variety of different spa packages, including overnight packages and spa days, helping guests save money.
My stay at Quay Hotel and Spa was nothing but relaxing, and I’m itching to revisit it for the stunning views, delicious food and comfortable rooms.
It’s easy to see why this hotel is busy throughout the year, but the spa, bar and restaurant never felt too busy at any time of the day.
I’d highly recommend checking the hotel and spa out, whether for a stay or dinner, it’s well worth the trip. The location is well-suited for anyone exploring Wales but I’d make the four-hour journey back there in a heartbeat.
