The horrifying 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday morning was felt across most of South-East Asia. The earthquake originated northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A 6.4 magnitude aftershock was felt around 12 minutes later near Mandalay, the USGS added. It has issued a red alert, listing the affected countries as Bangladesh, India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and China. Tremors have also been felt in Myanmar's neighbour, Thailand, which caused the complete collapse of a under-construction skyscraper. Around 50 people are trapped and three people have been killed. 

The first map shows the epicentre of northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar. USGS said the quake on Friday was shallow, at a depth of just six miles. The extent of the shaking in the surrounding region can be seen, with the weakest tremors being felt in the neighbouring countries of southwest China, northwest Laos, northern Thailand, southeast India and Bangladesh.

Fears of a tsunami has since erupted, with the Tsunami Warning Centre of China's Ministry of Natural Resources assessing local tsunamis may occur - although China would not be impacted by them.

India is willing to send assistance to Myanmar following Friday’s massive earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand,” Modi said on X. “India stands ready to offer all possible assistance.”

Authorities in neighbouring India and Bangladesh have reported no major impact from the quake.
